UOD, July, 2026, University Press Office (UNPO) | The University of Duhok (UOD) proudly conducted the graduation photo session for the fifth-year students of the College of Law, celebrating a new generation of legal professionals ready to contribute to the administration of justice, defend human rights, and uphold the rule of law in the Kurdistan Region, Iraq, and beyond.

A College Dedicated to Legal Excellence

Established during the 1997–1998 academic year as a department within the College of Administration and Economics, the College of Law became an independent college in 1999. Today, it remains one of the University of Duhok's leading academic institutions, committed to preparing generations of legal professionals who believe in justice, ethical practice, and the rule of law.

The college offers Bachelor's (LL.B.), Master's, and Doctoral programs through its Department of Law. Its curricula are continuously updated in accordance with modern academic standards adopted across the Kurdistan Region, ensuring graduates possess both strong legal knowledge and the analytical skills required to address contemporary legal challenges.

With a strong emphasis on research, critical thinking, legal reasoning, and innovation, the college employs modern teaching methodologies that encourage active learning, participation, and evidence-based analysis while preparing students for lifelong professional development.

Bridging Theory and Practice

One of the defining strengths of the College of Law is its commitment to experiential learning. Alongside classroom instruction, students participate in moot court competitions, practical legal exercises, and educational visits to courts and judicial institutions under the supervision of the college's Legal Clinic.

Students also benefit from field visits to several judicial and governmental institutions throughout Duhok Governorate, including the Execution Directorate, Land Registration Directorate, and Prison Administration. Annual educational visits to the Kurdistan Parliament and the Kurdistan Shura Council further strengthen their understanding of legislative and judicial processes.

The college also maintains scientific and academic partnerships with peer law schools through conferences, competitions, and workshops. Internationally, it collaborates with organizations such as the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and partner universities including Alexandria University (Egypt) and the University of Sharjah (UAE) through joint postgraduate supervision (Split-Site) programs.

Preparing Graduates for Diverse Legal Careers

Graduates of the College of Law are equipped with the legal knowledge, professional competencies, and practical experience necessary to pursue careers across a wide range of legal sectors. Many aspire to become practicing lawyers, judges, legal advisors, prosecutors, academics, or specialists within government institutions, international organizations, and private corporations.

By combining academic excellence with practical legal education, the college continues to prepare graduates capable of serving society with professionalism, integrity, and a strong commitment to justice.

Student Voices: Learning Beyond the Classroom

Interviewing some graduates (Fahad Abid Ismael, Mohanned Kamal Bakir, And Bakir Mohammed Haji) they stated that studying law has been about much more than learning legal texts. They describe their university experience as an opportunity to develop a true legal mindset—one built on critical thinking, analytical reasoning, and the ability to construct persuasive, evidence-based arguments.

Among the most memorable aspects of their studies were the moot court competitions, simulated trials, and interactive legal debates, where they experienced firsthand the responsibilities of prosecutors, defense attorneys, and legal advocates. These practical experiences helped bridge the gap between academic learning and professional practice.

Looking ahead, many graduates aspire to work in prestigious law firms, judicial institutions, corporate legal departments, or international organizations such as the United Nations and non-governmental organizations, with a shared ambition of promoting justice and protecting human rights.

As they prepare to enter the legal profession, the graduates expressed excitement about taking the legal oath, wearing the black robe, applying their knowledge in real courtrooms, assisting individuals in navigating complex legal systems, and achieving both professional and personal independence.

Reflections and Aspirations

The graduates also shared constructive reflections on their academic journey. While expressing appreciation for the strong legal foundation provided by the college, many noted the importance of expanding practical training opportunities and introducing greater emphasis on emerging legal fields such as cyber law, digital privacy, and artificial intelligence regulation. They also highlighted the value of strengthening soft skills—including negotiation, public speaking, client communication, and emotional intelligence—which are increasingly important in modern legal practice.

Their message to future law students is one of perseverance and purpose:

"Law school is a marathon, not a sprint. Study not only to pass examinations, but to understand people, society, and justice. Read beyond your textbooks, strengthen your communication skills, and always uphold your moral compass. The world needs lawyers who are not only knowledgeable, but also compassionate, ethical, and courageous."

Celebrating a New Beginning

The graduation photo session represents more than a celebration—it symbolizes the beginning of a new professional journey. As these graduates leave the University of Duhok, they carry with them the knowledge, values, and determination to contribute meaningfully to the legal profession and to society.
