College of Languages Celebrates International Translation Day
UoD, October 6, 2026, University Press Office (UNPO) | The Department of Translation at the College of Languages, University of Duhok (UoD) organized a symposium to celebrate International Translation Day, bringing together academic staff and students to highlight the importance of translation and interpreting and explore emerging developments in the profession.
Held on October 5, 2026, at the College of Languages, the event opened with a welcome speech by Lecturer Dr. Zeen Saeed Taha, Vice Dean and Lecturer at the Department of Translation, who highlighted the significance of International Translation Day and the essential role of translation in connecting languages, cultures, and communities.
According to the United Nations, International Translation Day is observed annually on September 30, recognizing the important role of translators and interpreters in bringing people together, facilitating communication, and promoting understanding among different languages and cultures. The programme featured a series of presentations addressing contemporary issues in translation and interpreting, with particular attention to professional practice, interpreting techniques, audiovisual translation, and the growing impact of artificial intelligence.
The main presentations included:
- “Translation in Practice: A Q&A with an Experienced Translator,” presented by Assistant Professor Dr. Shivan Shlaymoon Toma, who shared professional experiences and discussed the linguistic, cultural, and professional competencies required for effective translation.
- “From Listening to Interpreting: Exploring the Potential of the Shadowing Technique,” presented by Assistant Lecturer Sameera Nasir Hikmat, focusing on techniques for developing interpreting skills.
- “Subtitling vs. Dubbing: A Comparative Perspective,” presented by Lecturer Dr. Zeen Saeed Taha, exploring two important approaches to audiovisual translation.
- “How AI Is Transforming the Future of Dubbing,” presented by Assistant Lecturer Shlair Hani Shukri, examining the role of artificial intelligence and its potential impact on the future of dubbing.
The event addressed several key themes, including AI-assisted translation, machine translation, professional and ethical challenges, cultural sensitivity, and technological change, while providing a platform for academic exchange among lecturers, researchers, students, translators, interpreters, and professionals in the field.
The celebration reflects the University of Duhok’s commitment to academic exchange, professional development, digital transformation, and language education, supporting students and academics in responding to the changing demands of the translation profession.
