Understanding the Rights and Duties of Marriage: The UOD Provides Legal and Social Preparation for Youth

August 31, 2026, University Press Office | Within the framework of academic and social activities, the Political and Legal Research Center at the College of Law at the University of Duhok, in cooperation with the ASA Non-Governmental Organization for Legal and Social Development, concluded a three-day course titled "Strengthening Family Culture – Family Preparation" at Qubahan Hall, which lasted from August 24 to 26, 2026. In the opening ceremony, attended by a notable number of participating youth, opening remarks were delivered by the Director of the aforementioned center, Dr. Nashwan Khalid Salih, as well as the Dean of the College, Dr. Aveen Khalid Abdulrahman, in which they discussed the objectives of the course and the importance of the scientific role in building a family. Afterward, the course program began with the first seminar presented by Dr. Ismail Ababakr Ali, a lecturer at the college and the Executive Director of the organization, titled "Shared Duties Between Men and Women in the Engagement and Marriage Stage," in which the legal and social dimensions were analyzed in detail.

In the topics of the second day, the religious aspect was clearly explained by Mr. Hirsh Jamil, an expert in Sharia affairs, in a seminar titled "The Sharia Perspective on Marriage and the Importance of the Family," which emphasized the sacred principles of Islam in building a marriage. From another social perspective, Ms. Barin Musa, a lecturer at the University of Duhok, presented a seminar titled "The Social Aspect of Marriage," highlighting the role of the family in maintaining social balance and how to deal wisely with daily challenges.

On the third and final day, Dr. Nashwan Khalid Salih presented a seminar titled "Marital Rights over Men in the Personal Status Law." He thoroughly highlighted the legal aspect of a man's responsibility towards his wife, such as providing alimony, suitable housing, and securing the financial and legal rights of the wife according to the Personal Status Law, so that the participants would be accurately aware of the legal and financial obligations. At the end of the course, certificates of participation were distributed to all participating youth. The ultimate goal of this activity was to raise the level of legal, social, and religious culture to build a healthy family life.
