UoD, September 20, 2026 | University Press Office (UNPO) — The American Corner Duhok at the University of Duhok (UOD) organized a seminar on “Strengthening Skills in Diplomatic Relations, Protocol and Etiquette,” featuring Dr. Zirak Zebari, Member of the Iraqi Parliament’s Foreign Relations Committee, as the guest speaker, on September 16.
The seminar was attended by Dr. Hawar Khalil Tahir, Dean of the College of Political Science; Dr. Nazar Ameen Mohammed, Director of International Relations; Dr. Zirak Yousif Hasan, Director of American Corner Duhok; Gulistan Wasfi, representative of the Duhok branch of the Kurdistan Democratic Youth and Students Union; as well as a large number of UOD academic staff and students.
Protocol and Etiquette as Skills for Diplomacy and Everyday Life
In his presentation, Dr. Zirak Zebari emphasized that protocol and etiquette extend beyond formal diplomatic relations, representing principles that shape professional conduct, personal interactions, and an individual’s public image.
He explained that protocol establishes an organized system of formal conduct, while effective communication and appropriate etiquette can influence both diplomatic relationships and everyday interactions.
The seminar highlighted several key principles, including:
- Preparation before speaking and understanding the context of a conversation.
- Listening before responding to ensure effective and respectful communication.
- Communicating with clarity and without unnecessary ambiguity.
- Identifying common ground when engaging with others.
- Maintaining professional relationships even during disagreement or dissatisfaction.
- Using appropriate tone and body language to communicate confidence and respect.
- Respecting personal space and cultural differences in professional and social settings.
Dr. Zebari also stressed the importance of words and communication in diplomacy, noting that the way a message is delivered can contribute to opening opportunities for dialogue or creating barriers to further engagement.
Practical Learning and Interactive Exercises
The seminar went beyond theoretical discussion through practical examples and interactive exercises that allowed participants to apply principles of diplomatic communication, protocol, and etiquette to different situations.
The activity provided UOD students and staff with an opportunity to strengthen practical communication skills and gain a broader understanding of how diplomatic practices can be applied in both professional environments and everyday life.
The seminar reflects UOD’s strategy to student development, professional skills, international engagement, and practical learning, while providing students with opportunities to engage with experienced professionals and public figures on issues relevant to their academic and future careers.
