This visit marks an important step in expanding UOD’s global academic footprint, particularly in the field of governance studies, legal research, and federalism studies, in collaboration with Canadian academic institutions and policymakers.

Key Focus: Establishing the Center for Federalism Studies (CFFS)

A key highlight of the meeting was UOD’s initiative to establish a Center for Federalism Studies (CFFS), positioning Canada’s federal governance model as a case study for Iraq’s evolving governance structure. The center aims to:

  • Advance interdisciplinary research on federalism, decentralization, and governance.
  • Leverage Canada’s expertise in federal governance to provide comparative insights for Iraq’s political framework.
  • Facilitate faculty and student exchanges between UOD and leading Canadian institutions.
  • Develop specialized courses and policy dialogues that bridge academic research with practical governance applications.

Dr. Atrushi highlighted Canada’s experience as a federal country and emphasized how the Canadian model could offer valuable insights into regional governance, power-sharing mechanisms, and constitutional development in Iraq.

Canada’s Support

Ambassador Christopher Boehm expressed his support for the initiative and offered to connect the center with relevant resources in Canada.

This visit aligns with UOD’s broader strategy of engaging with international institutions to enhance research capabilities, promote academic freedom, and strengthen Kurdistan’s role in regional and global higher education networks.

Building Long-Term Academic and Diplomatic Relations

UOD has been at the forefront of strengthening international academic ties, demonstrated by previous engagements with Canadian policymakers.

📌 Previous High-Level Engagement:

  • Joint academic initiatives with Canadian universities in law, governance, and refugee studies.
  • Expanding institutional partnerships to enhance research and innovation.
  • Supporting UOD’s role in humanitarian and refugee support programs, reinforcing the university’s commitment to social impact.

This series of engagements highlights Canada’s recognition of UOD as a key academic and research institution in the Kurdistan Region, further positioning the university as a regional leader in governance, federalism studies, and international collaboration.

UOD’s Strategic Commitment to Global Engagement

As UOD continues to expand its international academic partnerships, the university remains dedicated to:

  • Fostering high-quality research that addresses pressing governance challenges in Iraq.
  • Strengthening global collaborations to create opportunities for students and faculty.
  • Promoting institutional accreditation by aligning with international higher education standards.
  • Enhancing academic innovation through interdisciplinary programs and policy-oriented studies.

This visit reinforces UOD’s strategic positioning as a university that not only prioritizes academic excellence but also plays a vital role in shaping governance policies and legal frameworks in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.
