UOD Academics Contribute to Regional Workshop on Protecting Archaeological Heritage through Digital Documentation

Academics from the University of Duhok participated in a regional workshop in Erbil dedicated to strengthening archaeological site protection through digital documentation and unified data systems. The event was organized under the supervision of the Kurdistan Region’s General Directorate of Antiquities and Heritage, in coordination with the international EAMENA Project initiative, which is meant for the digitalization of Archaeological heritage sites in the region.
Representing UOD were Dr. Zhiyar Sedeeq Ramadhan, Head of the Department of Archaeology, and Dr. Shireen Younis, Head of the Department of City Planning. The workshop was attended by Mr. Kivi Mustafa, Director General of Antiquities and Heritage, alongside heritage officials from Kurdistan Regional Government institutions and heads of archaeology departments from universities in Duhok, Erbil, and Sulaimani.
Held on February 10, and under the title “Using the Database and Mobile Application to Record Endangered Archaeological Sites,” the workshop focused on enhancing institutional capacity to document and safeguard archaeological heritage. Participants received practical training on creating and managing a unified national database for archaeological sites, with the aim of strengthening heritage protection through coordinated digital networks.
UOD’s participation reflects its growing role in advancing cultural heritage preservation, supporting digital transformation in archaeological research, and contributing academic expertise to regional initiatives that safeguard the historical identity of Kurdistan.
