UOD Delegation Visits Italian University of Palermo to Strengthen Research Collaboration

As part of its continued commitment to international academic cooperation and knowledge exchange, the University of Duhok participated in scholarly engagement activities hosted by the University of Palermo in Italy, through the visit of Dr. Omran Ali Omer, Director of the Center for Peacebuilding and Conflict Resolution Studies.

Advancing Academic Dialogue on Peacebuilding

The visit took place during the “MARE: Mediterranean Alliance for Research and Education” Winter School, held from 9–13 February 2026, which brought together scholars and partner institutions including Birzeit University, Lebanese International University, and University of Tunis El Manar.

During the sessions, Dr. Omran and the participating delegation contributed to academic discussions on peacebuilding, conflict transformation, and post-conflict recovery. Particular attention was given to the Kurdish cause, which was examined as a regional example in discussions on coexistence, resilience, and sustainable peace strategies.

Creating Opportunities for Research Collaboration

A central aim of the visit was to foster an environment conducive to joint research collaboration, interdisciplinary dialogue, and academic networking among participating universities. Discussions explored possibilities for collaborative research projects, academic exchanges, and future joint initiatives addressing regional and Mediterranean peace challenges.

Supporting UOD’s Strategic Vision

This engagement directly supports the University of Duhok’s Strategic Plan (2023–2038), especially its focus on:

  • Expanding international academic partnerships

  • Strengthening research collaboration networks

  • Promoting knowledge exchange that supports stability and sustainable development

Through such initiatives, UOD continues to position itself as an active academic partner in global discussions on peacebuilding, coexistence, and social resilience.

The visit is expected to open pathways for future cooperation in research projects, academic mobility, and joint scholarly events in peace and conflict studies, further reinforcing the University of Duhok’s regional and international academic role.
