The Center for Peace and Conflict Resolution Studies at the University of Duhok (UOD), in collaboration with the Lutheran World Federation (LWF) in Iraq, organized a two-day workshop entitled "Developing the Skills of Social Media Activists in Writing about Human Rights Issues and Promoting Diversity in Duhok Governorate." The workshop was held on July 8–9, 2026, bringing together a group of journalists and social media activists.
The workshop which was facilitated by the trainer, Khider Kalo Ali, aimed to strengthen participants' understanding of human rights principles, enhance their professional writing skills on human rights issues, and promote responsible media practices that support diversity, inclusion, and peaceful coexistence within society.
During the sessions, participants explored the fundamental principles of human rights, which are universal rights and freedoms guaranteed to every individual regardless of race, nationality, language, religion, or any other status. Discussions highlighted the main categories of human rights, including civil and political rights, economic and social rights, and cultural rights, emphasizing key concepts such as the right to life, freedom of expression, equality before the law, freedom of belief, the right to education, healthcare, employment, cultural participation, and the right to live in a clean and sustainable environment.
The workshop also emphasized that respect for human dignity forms the foundation of all human rights. Participants discussed the important role of journalists and social media activists in promoting public awareness, fostering tolerance, combating discrimination, and encouraging peaceful coexistence through ethical and responsible media content.
The initiative reflects the University of Duhok's continued commitment to advancing human rights education, promoting peacebuilding and community engagement, and supporting the objectives of its Strategic Plan (2023–2038) through partnerships that contribute to social cohesion and sustainable development.
