University of Duhok Hosts IUPAC Global Women’s Breakfast 2026 Under the Theme “Many Voices, One Science”
UOD – February 10, 2026 | University Press Office (UNPO) —
The University of Duhok (UOD), through the College of Science / Department of Chemistry and the UOD–ACS Student Chapter of the American Chemical Society, hosted the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) Global Women’s Breakfast (GWB) 2026, joining a global scientific initiative that promotes gender equality, inclusion, and collaboration in science.
The event was attended by Dr. Lokman Hadi Hassan, Vice President of the University of Duhok, alongside deans of various colleges, heads of academic departments, faculty members, and students. Participating student chapters showcased their activities through posters highlighting their scientific engagement and community outreach initiatives.
A Unified Scientific Platform
Organized by Dr. Suhad A. Yasin and Dr. Wafa Kadhim Essa, the event brought together women scientists, students, decision-makers, and male allies in an inclusive setting that encouraged dialogue, networking, and international scientific cooperation.
This year’s Global Women’s Breakfast marked the sixth consecutive participation of the UOD–ACS Student Chapter since 2021, under the supervision of Dr. Suhad A. Yasin. Over the years, the initiative has evolved into a key platform for engaging academic leaders and promoting women’s leadership in science.
Multi-Chapter Engagement Across Disciplines
The 2026 edition witnessed broad participation from several international student chapters at UOD, including:
- Department of Architectural Engineering Student Chapter – American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS)
- Department of Geology Student Chapter – Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE)
- Department of Physics Student Chapter – Society of Physics Students (SPS/UOD Chapter)
- Department of Chemistry – UOD–ACS Student Chapter
These chapters collectively engaged in scientific and awareness-raising activities, emphasizing the role of science in serving society. Current student membership includes 50 students in the Physics chapter, 35 in Geology, and 9 in Engineering, with Chemistry participation to be finalized.
Reflecting on this year’s collaboration, organizers highlighted that “many chapters gathered around one science table,” reinforcing the spirit of unity and shared scientific responsibility.
Advancing UOD’s Strategic Vision
The event aligns with UOD’s Strategic Plan (2023–2038), particularly its focus on gender equality, interdisciplinary collaboration, student empowerment, and international engagement, further positioning the University of Duhok as a hub for inclusive scientific dialogue and global academic initiatives.
