UOD Hosts Scientific Seminar on Endocrine Parallels Between Humans and Animals”

The College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Duhok (UOD) hosted a distinguished scientific seminar on Tuesday, October 29, 2025, titled “Top Endocrine Stories in Animals that Mimic Humans.” This event was held as part of the college’s ongoing commitment to enhancing knowledge exchange, scientific research, and interdisciplinary learning.

The seminar was presented by Professor Bayar Ahmed Qasim, a professor at the University of Duhok, Honorary Lecturer & Tutor at the University of South Wales, UK, and the author of the book Historical Landmarks in Endocrinology and Diabetes.

Key Highlights of the Seminar

  • Professor Qasim reviewed important cases in animal endocrinology that provide crucial insights into understanding human health and diseases.

  • The pivotal role of thyroid hormones in frog metamorphosis was highlighted.

  • The discussion explored how insulin and leptin regulate metabolism in bears during winter hibernation.

  • The relationship between slower heart rates, hormonal control, and longevity across various species was also examined.

The session witnessed a remarkable attendance of lecturers and students in the Dr. Raoof Aziz Hall, enriching the discussions and emphasizing the importance of this vital scientific field that bridges animal science and human health.

At the conclusion of the seminar, Dr. Mohammed Shukri Shukur extended his thanks to the attendees and addressed the students and lecturers, urging everyone — especially during this critical time preceding the Iraqi Council of Representatives elections — to uphold civic responsibility through active participation and supporting candidates committed to the progress and prosperity of the Kurdistan Region.
