UOD, September 1, 2025 – University Press Office (UNPO) | The Department of Mathematics at the College of Science, University of Duhok (UOD), in collaboration with the Iraqi Mathematics Association and the Anwar Center for Development and Education, organized a scientific workshop titled:

“Mathematics Creates Artificial Intelligence, and Intelligence Serves Sustainability.”

The workshop took place in the seminar hall of the College of Science with the distinguished presence of Dr. Mohammed Aziz Ibrahem, Dean of the College of Science, and Dr. Nareen Sabih Muhemed, Head of the Department of Mathematics, alongside faculty members, and researchers.

The event was organized by Dr. Azhaar Hassan Sallo, Dr. Huda Younus Najm, Sherzad Mohammad Ajeel, Asmaa Muhiadeen Abdulrahman, and Dilshad Jundi Khalat.

The workshop highlighted the key role of mathematics as the backbone of artificial intelligence (AI), providing the theories and methods that underpin algorithms, modeling, and decision-making processes in modern AI systems. Discussions also emphasized how AI contributes to sustainability, particularly in areas such as smart resource management, environmental monitoring, and educational innovation.

This initiative aimed to:

• Show the vital role of mathematics in AI development.
  
  
• Explore AI applications that promote sustainability.
  
  
• Encourage collaboration between mathematics, AI, and sustainability fields.
  
  
• Inspire students and researchers to pursue ethical and impactful AI research.
  
  

The workshop reflects UOD’s strategic vision of promoting cutting-edge research, interdisciplinary collaboration, and sustainable development. It also demonstrates how academic initiatives can directly support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) while contributing to the scientific progress of Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.
