University of Duhok Advances Green Campus Strategy with Olive Tree Plantation Initiative
As part of the University of Duhok's (UoD) Green Campus Strategy and in alignment with its Strategic Plan 2023-2038, the university marked a significant milestone on Thursday, December 5, 2024, by planting 3,000 olive trees on its campus. This initiative reflects UoD’s commitment to sustainable development, food security, and fostering a greener academic environment.
The event was attended by Dr. Dawood Sulaiman Atrushi, President of the University of Duhok, Dr. Dilshad Abduljabar Haleem, Vice President for Administration and Financial Affairs (VPAF), Dr. Nabaz Ibraheem Mohammed, Vice President for Student Affairs (VPST), and Lawyer Binas Doski, Director of Shinal Company, along with faculty members and students. The olive trees were generously provided by Shinal Company, a key partner in supporting the university’s environmental and educational goals.
A Step Toward Sustainable Agriculture and Food Security
Dr. Nabaz Ibraheem Mohammed VPST and the chair for Green Campus Development team expressed gratitude to Shinal Company for their invaluable contribution, emphasizing the university’s ongoing efforts to transform its campus into a model of sustainability. He highlighted that since the beginning of 2024, 8,500 seedlings, including fruit-bearing trees, have been planted across 30 dunams of university land. This initiative not only enriches the university’s greenery but also serves as a living laboratory for students and researchers to engage with sustainable agricultural practices.
The Role of Olive Trees in Sustainability and Food Security
The olive tree (Olea europaea) is renowned for its resilience, long lifespan, and cultural significance. It thrives in Mediterranean-like climates, making Duhok’s climate—characterized by hot summers and mild, wet winters—ideal for its growth. Olive trees are drought-resistant, require minimal maintenance, and contribute significantly to carbon sequestration, making them an excellent choice for sustainable landscaping.
Beyond their environmental benefits, olive trees symbolize food security. Their fruit is a staple in many diets and can be used to produce olive oil, a valuable commodity with health benefits such as improving heart health, reducing inflammation, and providing antioxidants. By integrating olive trees into the campus landscape, UoD fosters awareness about sustainable food production and showcases the potential of green agriculture in addressing regional challenges.
Green Campus: A Vision for the Future
UoD’s Green and Walkable Campus strategy prioritizes creating an eco-friendly, accessible, and vibrant academic environment. The plantation initiative aligns with the university’s mission to:
- Promote environmental stewardship.
- Enhance campus sustainability.
- Expose students and faculty to practical applications of sustainable agriculture.
This vision also contributes to the university’s Strategic Plan by supporting global sustainability goals, enriching campus biodiversity, and providing hands-on learning opportunities for students in fields such as environmental sciences, agriculture, and urban planning.
Collaboration and Community Engagement
The collaboration with Shinal Company underscores the importance of partnerships in achieving sustainability goals. UoD actively engages with local businesses, government bodies, and international organizations to advance its mission of fostering innovation, education, and environmental responsibility.
Impact on the Academic Community
The initiative empowers students and faculty to actively participate in creating a greener campus. By involving students in tree planting and maintenance, UoD instills a sense of responsibility and environmental awareness, equipping future leaders with the skills to address pressing ecological and food security challenges.
Looking Ahead
The University of Duhok remains steadfast in its commitment to sustainability, with plans to expand its green initiatives across the campus. By combining educational excellence with environmental responsibility, UoD continues to set an example for universities regionally and globally.
