The First Consultative Meeting on Framing Research Lines to Enhance Scientific Research Quality at UOD
UOD, August 22, 2025 – The Deanship for Research and Innovation (DRIN) at the University of Duhok (UOD) held its first consultative meeting at the Cultural and Social Center to discuss ways of improving scientific research through the implementation of structured research lines.
The meeting, held on August 20, was attended by UOD President, Dr. Dawood Sulaiman Atrushi, alongside vice presidents, members of the University Council, and representatives of colleges, directorates, and scientific centers and researchers. The discussions focused on how to establish a sustainable framework for scientific research excellence, aligning UOD with international academic standards.
In his opening remarks, Dr. Atrushi emphasized that the creation of the Deanship for Research and Innovation marks a significant milestone for UOD’s academic journey. He noted:
“Research is an important part of our mission as a university, alongside developing our students. By establishing this deanship, we aim to foster a stronger research culture, similar to leading universities worldwide.”
Dr. Atrushi further explained that the Deanship is structured into three sections, each bringing together several colleges to facilitate collaboration, streamline research activities, and strengthen interdepartmental ties.
Meanwhile, Dr. Sherzad Sabri Ali, Dean of DRIN, highlighted the meeting’s main goal: to propose research lines for the academic year 2025–2026. These research lines will serve as guiding themes for colleges, departments, and centers, enabling them to conduct research in a more organized, collaborative, and impactful manner.
“Our focus is to ensure that research at the University of Duhok directly addresses societal challenges while contributing to the advancement of knowledge. Through research lines, we can avoid duplication, encourage innovative topics, and guide researchers toward solving real-life problems,” Dr. Sherzad stated.
Objectives of Research Lines at UOD
The University of Duhok outlined clear objectives for adopting research lines:
- Framing Research within Clear Themes: Organizing research efforts within designated scientific themes.
- Deepening Knowledge: Encouraging focused, in-depth studies within chosen areas.
- Alignment with UOD’s Vision & Mission: Ensuring all research reflects the university’s academic and societal commitments.
- Encouraging Collaboration: Bringing researchers together into interdisciplinary teams for impactful results.
- Improving Research Quality: Enhancing originality, credibility, and global visibility of UOD’s research.
- Meeting Societal Needs: Addressing community challenges and contributing to sustainable development in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq.
- Exploring New Research Topics: Avoiding repetition and promoting innovation through discovery-driven research.
Definition of Research Lines
Research lines are specified scientific themes defined at the level of university, colleges, or research centers. They serve as roadmaps, guiding faculty and students to produce organized, high-quality, and impactful research that contributes to both academic advancement and societal benefit.
Steps for Identifying Research Lines
- Define the research priorities of each college or center.
- Align with the vision and mission of UOD and its units.
- Focus on societal needs and development priorities.
- Stay within each department’s area of expertise.
- Evaluate the human and material capabilities of the institution.
- Identify strengths and weaknesses of research potential.
- Map the specializations of faculty and researchers.
- Consider available laboratories, resources, and infrastructure.
Future Outlook: Research in Line with UOD’s Strategic Plan
The University of Duhok confirmed that this was the first in a series of consultative meetings on developing its research strategy. Regular follow-ups and new initiatives will be implemented to elevate UOD’s role as a leading research university in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq, while also fostering international collaborations.
