University of Duhok Explores Ahmed Khani’s Enduring Influence on Kurdish Thought and Education

The Department of Kurdish Language at the College of Languages, University of Duhok (UOD) organized a scientific and literary symposium titled “The Impact of Ahmed Khani on Kurdish National Culture and Education”, reaffirming the university’s commitment to preserving Kurdish cultural heritage and advancing critical academic discourse.

Held on Thursday in the Seminar Hall of the College of Languages, the symposium brought together academics, researchers, and students throughout the college to examine the intellectual, literary, and educational legacy of Ahmed Khani, one of the most influential figures in Kurdish intellectual history. The symposium aligns with UOD’s Strategic Plan (2023–2038), particularly its focus on cultural identity, humanities research, and academic knowledge production.

Scholarly Panels and Thematic Contributions

The event featured a dedicated academic panel moderated by Dr. Sagvan Abdulrahman Taha, from the Department of Kurdish Language, during which three in-depth scholarly papers were presented:

  • Dr. Hussein Othman Abdulrahman, Head of the Department of Persian Language, explored “The Aesthetics of Death in Khani’s Mem u Zin,” providing a critical literary reading of symbolic and philosophical dimensions in Khani’s work.

  • Mr. Afraz Suleiman Haji presented a study titled “A Cognitive-Psychological Reading of Khani’s Nubara,” focusing on educational values and cognitive learning aspects embedded in classical Kurdish texts.
  • Dr. Sherzad Shafi’ Babo (from Salahaddin University-Erbil), delivered a paper on “The Translation of Mem u Zin, which he implemented. He highlighted his experience in Translating Mam u Zin from Kurdish into Persian: Importance and Challenges,” highlighting linguistic accuracy, cultural transmission, and interpretative complexities.

Academic and Cultural Significance

The symposium aimed to deepen scholarly understanding of Ahmed Khani’s intellectual contributions, emphasizing his lasting influence on Kurdish national consciousness, education, and literary modernization. It also served as a platform to encourage academic research in Kurdish studies and strengthen interdisciplinary dialogue within the humanities.

By hosting such academic initiatives, the University of Duhok continues to position itself as a leading institution in Kurdish studies, cultural preservation, and higher education excellence—bridging tradition with contemporary academic inquiry.
