UOD, September 12, 2026, University Press Office (UNPO) | The College of Law at the University of Duhok (UOD) hosted a scientific workshop on “The Five-Year System in Law Colleges in the Kurdistan Region”, bringing together the deans of the Colleges of Law at the Universities of Duhok, Zakho, and Nawroz to assess the experience and effectiveness of the five-year legal education system.

The workshop organized on September 7, was attended by Dr. Aveen Khalid Abdulrahman, Dean of the College of Law at UOD; Dr. Hazhar Jamal Yasin, Dean of the College of Law at the University of Zakho; and Dr. Dilshad Abdulrahman Yousif, Dean of the College of Law and Political Science at Nawroz University.

The discussions focused on evaluating the extent to which the five-year system has achieved its academic and professional objectives, particularly in improving the quality of legal education, preparing graduates for the labour market, and strengthening students’ academic and practical competencies.

During the workshop, academics and legal specialists discussed the system’s key strengths and challenges. Particular attention was given to its contribution to strengthening legal knowledge, promoting research and academic inquiry, and expanding opportunities for practical training. Participants also highlighted challenges including the longer duration of study, the financial and social burdens on students, and the need for continuous review and development of academic curricula and programmes.

The participants emphasized the importance of conducting a systematic, evidence-based academic evaluation of the five-year system to determine whether it continues to meet its intended objectives and whether adjustments or further development are required.

At the conclusion of the workshop, a set of recommendations and proposals was developed for submission to the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research and other relevant authorities. The recommendations aim to support informed decision-making on the future of the five-year system based on academic evidence, outcomes, and comprehensive evaluation.

The workshop reflects the University of Duhok’s commitment to quality assurance, academic development, evidence-based decision-making, and continuous improvement in higher education, in line with the University’s Strategic Plan and its focus on strengthening academic programmes and preparing graduates for professional and societal needs.
