University of Duhok Seminar Explores the Impact of Silica Nanoparticles on Hybrid Epoxy Composites

June 29, 2025, 9:09 a.m.

📍 College of Agricultural Engineering Sciences (CAES) – June 11, 2024, University Press Office (UNPO) | In alignment with the University of Duhok’s Strategic Plan 2023–2038, particularly its emphasis on advancing research excellence and industrial innovation, the Branch of Basic Sciences at the College of Agricultural Engineering Sciences hosted a scientific seminar titled:

“Effects of Silica Nanoparticles on Glass and Carbon Fiber Epoxy Composites”
📅 Held on: May 7– 11:30 AM
📍 Location: Branch of Basic Sciences Seminar Hall

Presented by Mr. Thaker Saleh Dawood, the seminar delved into the potential of silica nanoparticle-enhanced hybrid composites for structural applications in sectors such as aerospace, marine, automotive, and construction. These composites combine glass and carbon fibers within an epoxy matrix, strengthened further through nanoparticle infusion.

The study highlighted:

  • The use of vacuum bagging and heat curing in sample preparation.

  • Mechanical property evaluations using tensile tests based on ASTM standards, including parameters such as E1, E2, G12, and v12.

  • A comparative analysis of clean epoxy vs. silica-reinforced composites.

  • Integration of experimental and numerical modeling to ensure result validity.

The findings demonstrated that silica nanoparticles significantly enhance mechanical strength and performance, suggesting their effectiveness in high-load, structural contexts. This research contributes directly to the University of Duhok’s mission to bridge academic research with practical engineering advancements and industrial needs.
