Getting Started

Rewarding careers don’t happen by accident. Be intentional about using your time at the University of Duhok to think critically about what a fulfilling career means to you and what steps you need to take to reach that goal.

1. Explore Yourself and Your Options

  • Reflect on your interests, strengths, and values to identify potential career paths.
  • Schedule an appointment with a career counselor at the CDC for guidance on career exploration and decision-making.
  • Research potential careers using online resources such as LinkedIn, industry-specific websites, or professional associations.
  • Conduct informational interviews with professionals in fields of interest to learn about the realities of different careers.
  • Attend career fairs, workshops, and employer sessions organized by the CDC to explore opportunities and practice networking.
  • Determine if further education (graduate or professional school) is needed for your desired career.
  • Use CDC resources and guides to learn about job search strategies and industry expectations.

2. Prepare Your Materials and Develop Your Skills

  • Prepare a targeted CV and cover letter and have them reviewed by a career counselor at the CDC.
  • Join student clubs or community organizations that align with your personal and professional interests and take on leadership roles to develop transferable skills.
  • Participate in mock interviews offered by the CDC or during special career events.
  • Create or update your LinkedIn profile and use professional examples to guide your branding.
  • Identify at least three professional references for use when applying for internships, jobs, or graduate programs.
  • Research graduate or professional schools of interest, review requirements, and schedule any required entrance exams.
  • Review in-demand skills for your field and actively seek opportunities to develop them through coursework, volunteer work, internships, or projects.

3. Participate and Take Action

  • Attend career fairs, employer sessions, and networking events to discover opportunities and build professional connections.
  • Apply for internships, co-ops, part-time jobs, research positions, or volunteer programs to gain hands-on experience before graduation.
  • Network with alumni and professionals in your field through LinkedIn or CDC-facilitated connections.
  • Prepare for job negotiations by researching typical salaries and evaluating your personal budgetary needs.
  • Track all applications for jobs, internships, and graduate school programs to stay organized and proactive.
  • Check in regularly with your career counselor to review progress, update your action plan, and receive feedback on CVs, cover letters, or interview readiness.

Following these steps will help you explore, prepare, and participate effectively in your career journey, ensuring you graduate ready to succeed in your chosen path.
