The American Corner-Duhok Hosts Seminar on Obtaining U. S. F1 Visas for Academic Purposes
The American Corner-Duhok at the University of Duhok hosted a significant seminar on ‘U. S. F1 Visas for Academic Purposes’ in the Central Library, on November 17, 2024. The seminar which witnessed participation of students, graduates, and academic staff of the UOD, showed useful insights of managing obtaining F1 Visas and successful visa interviewing methods. The event was led by Andrew Franks, Consular Officer at the U.S. Consulate General in Erbil.
The seminar provided UOD faculty and staff with valuable information about the process of applying for an F1 visa, which is required for academic studies in the United States. Attendees gained a comprehensive understanding of the eligibility criteria, documentation requirements, and the steps involved in securing a U.S. student visa. Andrew Franks shared practical tips on how to prepare for visa interviews and answered a range of questions from participants eager to broaden their academic and research opportunities in the U.S.
During the seminar, Mr. Andrew clarified that studying in the U.S. is beneficial due to grants and scholarships, research opportunities, and the diverse campuses that the U.S. offers. The student visa types are: F Visa (for students in academic or language programs), M Visa (for vocational students or other non-academic students), and J Visa (for exchange visitors, secondary students, college/university students, or non-degree students).
He also clarified a number of documents required in the visa application process, including the I-20 form, which registers you as officially accepted at a university; the DS-160 form, which includes the applicant’s basic information and travel history; and the I-20, SEVP, and SEVIS, which are codes assigned to students during their stay in the U.S. These codes track students' information and attendance.
The seminar also covered the process of scheduling an interview after filling out the DS-160 form, by visiting the Consulate General’s website and answering a set of questions. It was noted that student visa applicants can request expedited appointments. On the other hand, the seminar emphasized how to manage the interview process, advising students to clearly articulate their goals for the program they have chosen.
The event was part of the university’s ongoing efforts to foster international academic collaboration and support its faculty members in expanding their research networks globally. It also highlighted UOD’s commitment to enhancing academic mobility and providing its staff with the resources needed to pursue higher education and research opportunities abroad. The UOD looks forward to continuing its partnership with the U.S. Consulate General and other international institutions to offer similar opportunities for staff development and academic growth.
