UOD Hosts Symposium on Promoting Diversity and Peacebuilding in the Region
UOD – July 30, 2025 | University Press Office (UNPO) | The Center for Peace and Conflict Resolution Studies at the University of Duhok (UOD) successfully hosted a thought-provoking symposium under the theme:
“Protecting and Strengthening National and Religious Diversity in the Region.”
Held on Sunday, July 27, 2025, at the Cultural and Social Center, the event brought together academic experts, religious leaders, and government representatives to discuss key pathways for advancing social cohesion, interfaith harmony, and youth-led peacebuilding initiatives in a region known for its rich diversity.
The symposium began with opening remarks from Prof. Dr. Dawood Atrushi, President of the University of Duhok, who emphasized the importance of such dialogues in a multicultural society like Iraq.
“This meeting is important because we live in a diverse country and share a common vision,” said Dr. Atrushi. “Topics like these are crucial, as we must pass on the values of peace, tolerance, and coexistence to future generations.”
He also reaffirmed UOD’s inclusive educational environment, noting that the university “embraces students from all backgrounds without any obstacles.”
Following the President’s address, a representative from the Lutheran World Federation (LWF) took the floor, highlighting the organization’s commitment to youth empowerment and community resilience.
“This project is part of a Rights-Based Approach to Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) and strengthening social cohesion between internally displaced persons (IDPs) and host communities,” the representative stated, adding that youth engagement lies at the heart of their peacebuilding strategy.
