University of Duhok Hosts High-Level Panel on the Future of Rojava (Western Kurdistan): Opportunities and Political Scenarios
UOD, February 2, 2026, University Press Office (UNPO) |
The University of Duhok (UOD) reaffirmed its role as a leading academic platform for policy dialogue and regional studies by hosting a high-level panel discussion on the future of Rojava (Western Kurdistan) and its political, humanitarian, and regional implications.
The event, organized by the College of Political Sciences, on February 1, was held in the presence of Dr. Dawood Sulaiman Atrushi, President of the University of Duhok, alongside academics, researchers, policy experts, and university faculty members.
Academic Leadership and Strategic Vision
In his opening remarks, Dr. Dawood emphasized the importance of Kurdish unity, collective political positioning, and the strategic role played by President Masoud Barzani in supporting stability and dialogue concerning Rojava. He highlighted the responsibility of universities and research centers—particularly at UOD—to deepen academic engagement through research, seminars, policy workshops, and international conferences addressing regional developments.
This approach aligns with UOD’s strategic priorities in research excellence, internationalization, and policy-relevant academic output.
Regional Role of the Kurdistan Regional Government
Dr. Saman Sorani, Senior Advisor to the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), underlined the KRG’s humanitarian and political support for the people of Rojava, including the provision of food, medical aid, and essential services. He also highlighted the diplomatic role of Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, particularly during international forums such as Davos, in advocating for political stability in Syria in a manner that safeguards Kurdish interests.
International and Regional Dynamics
Addressing international policy, Dr. Nawzad Abdullah from Salahaddin University – Erbil discussed the inconsistency of U.S. policy toward Rojava, stressing the need for stronger Kurdish coordination amid shifting geopolitical realities. He also shed light on the mediation efforts of President Nechirvan Barzani, particularly his role in easing tensions between Rojava and Damascus and supporting ceasefire initiatives.
Future Scenarios and Regional Challenges
In the concluding panel, Dr. Hawar Khalil Taher, Dean of the College of Political Sciences at UOD, presented several future political scenarios for Rojava and Syria. His analysis focused on the regional influence of Turkey, describing Ankara’s approach toward Kurdish political structures as largely negative, while also examining possible shifts in Damascus’ policies and the broader implications for Kurdish rights and governance.
Knowledge Production and Policy Impact
The panel concluded with an open discussion and Q&A session, reinforcing UOD’s commitment to serving as a knowledge hub that bridges academic research and policymaking, particularly on issues related to Middle Eastern politics, Kurdish studies, conflict resolution, and regional stability.
