UOD| May 28, 2026 | University Press Office (UNPO) —
In line with its strategic commitment to innovation, applied learning, and strengthening the connection between academia and the labor market, the University of Duhok (UOD) officially launched the 13th Annual Engineering Design Day Exhibition at the University’s Convention Center on May 25, 2026.
The event was attended by Dr. Dawood Sulaiman Atrushi, President of the University of Duhok; Dean of the College of Engineering, Dr. Nashwan Shawkat Mahmood, Majid Sayed Salih, Deputy Governor of Duhok; Dr. Shهreen Husni, member of the Duhok Organizing Office of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP); Ms. Gulistan Wasfi, representative of the Kurdistan Students and Youth Union–Duhok; alongside government officials, academic leaders, faculty members, industry representatives, students, and families.
Showcasing Engineering Innovation and Student Talent
Following the opening ceremony, the University President and guests toured the exhibition halls, where graduating students presented their engineering projects, design concepts, and practical applications.
Students provided detailed explanations about:
- The ideas behind their projects
- Technical and engineering methodologies
- Real-world implementation possibilities
- Innovative solutions to contemporary challenges
Each project targeted the needs of a specific public or private-sector institution, reflecting UOD’s commitment to applied learning and community-oriented education.
180 Graduation Projects Reflect Applied Learning
This year’s exhibition featured projects developed by 180 final-year students from different departments of the College of Engineering, Department of Architectural Engineering, Department of Biomedical Engineering, Department of Civil Engineering, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Department of Mechanical Engineering
One of the most remarkable highlights of this edition was the participation of three International Chapters, appearing for the first time in the history of the University in such a large-scale academic exhibition.
- AIAS Chapter – American Institute of Architecture Students
(the first chapter of its kind in Kurdistan and Iraq) - Engineering Without Borders (EWB)
- Association of Energy Engineers (AEE)
This milestone reflects the growing internationalization and academic advancement of the College of Engineering.
The displayed projects were not limited to theoretical concepts; rather, they represented the outcomes of intensive practical training experiences.
Bridging Academia and the Labor Market
The primary objective of the projects was to develop scientific and modern engineering solutions addressing real societal and industrial challenges in areas such as:
- Construction and infrastructure
- Technology and innovation
- Public services and urban development
- Sustainable engineering practices
Each project targeted the needs of a specific public or private-sector institution, reflecting UOD’s commitment to applied learning and community-oriented education.
Expanding Innovation and Industry Engagement
This year’s edition introduced several new dimensions, including:
- Greater involvement of private-sector companies and engineering professionals in evaluating projects.
- The launch of a specialized engineering podcast linked to the exhibition to discuss emerging engineering trends and innovations.
Supporting UOD’s Strategic Vision
The Annual Engineering Design Day strongly aligns with UOD’s Strategic Plan (2023–2038), particularly in:
- Industry–academia collaboration
- Student-centered and experiential learning
- Internationalization and global engagement
Through initiatives such as Engineering Design Day, UOD continues to strengthen its role as a leading institution in engineering education, scientific creativity, and applied research in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq.
