UOD – August 26, 2025 | University Press Office (UNPO) – The University of Duhok’s American Corner, in collaboration with the Youth Global Network (YGN), successfully organized a workshop titled “Road to Global Opportunities”, on August 21,and attended by 88 participants including undergraduate and graduate students, as well as members of the wider community.

The workshop aimed to equip young people with the knowledge and skills needed to access international scholarships, internships, exchange programs, and leadership opportunities, enabling them to represent Kurdistan and Iraq on the global stage.

Exploring the Role of American Corners

The event opened with an introduction to the American Corner–Duhok and its mission to serve the community through education and capacity-building. Dr. Zirak Yousif Hasan, Director of the American Corner, outlined the role of American Spaces worldwide, highlighting:

• The presence of American Corners in Kurdistan.
  
  
• The six core strategies that guide their work.
  
  
• Services offered, including cultural programs, English language resources, academic advising, and youth development initiatives.
  
  
• Educational and training opportunities provided to support the local community.
  
  

Building Pathways to International Engagement

Guest speaker Safin H. Mohammed, Founder of the Youth Global Network, shared his personal journey from Erbil to international platforms in Kenya, the USA, Thailand, Malaysia, and the Maldives, offering inspiring insights on accessing funded opportunities.

Interactive sessions guided participants on:

• Types of global opportunities (academic, leadership, professional).
  
  
• Application essentials, including motivation letters, STAR-method essay writing, and common mistakes to avoid.
  
  
• Practical skills in pitching and presenting ideas, through a plenary “Pitch Your Passion” activity.
  
  

The day also featured a panel discussion with scholarship alumni, NGO representatives, and faculty members, who addressed barriers facing youth and shared practical tips for success.

Networking and Positive Impact

The workshop attracted strong participation and engagement, with attendees actively networking during breaks and contributing to discussions. According to feedback, participants found the program highly beneficial and motivating, describing it as both “enjoyable” and “eye-opening.”

A Platform for Empowering Youth

By hosting “Road to Global Opportunities”, the University of Duhok’s American Corner reaffirmed its role as a bridge between local youth and international platforms, providing access to resources that foster education, leadership, cultural exchange, and innovation.
