UOD’s College of Science Celebrates National Chemistry Week 2025 as Iraq’s First Institution to Join the Global Event Annually
UOD | October 22, 2025 | University Press Office (UNPO) —
The College of Science at the University of Duhok (UOD) hosted a vibrant educational event as part of the American Chemical Society’s (ACS) National Chemistry Week 2025, held under the global theme “The Hidden Life of Spices.” The celebration brought together students and faculty members from the Departments of Chemistry and Biology, who collaborated to explore the fascinating science behind spices—their aromas, flavors, colors, and cultural significance.
Exploring the Science and History of Spices
The event featured interactive exhibits and demonstrations that revealed the chemistry hidden in everyday spices.
Biology students presented the origins and historical role of spices, tracing their mentions in sacred texts such as the Quran Bible, and Vedas, and their influence on ancient trade routes that connected continents and inspired exploration. They also shared insights into the health benefits and cultural uses of different spices, complemented by fun facts and practical information.
Meanwhile, chemistry students demonstrated how chemical compounds such as capsaicin (responsible for chili heat) and myristicin (found in nutmeg) produce unique tastes and aromas. Visitors learned how essential oils are extracted and how spices are used in food, medicine, perfumes, and dyes — bridging the gap between traditional knowledge and modern science.
Interactive Learning and Community Engagement
To conclude the event, students organized a lively “Spice Challenge”, where participants were invited to identify mystery spices by smell. Winners received handmade gifts crafted by the students, making the day both educational and enjoyable.
Dr. Suhad Abdulrahman Yaseen, the supervisor of the event, expressed her pride in the students’ creativity and teamwork:
“This event demonstrates the power of science in connecting our daily lives with global knowledge. The University of Duhok continues to lead in Iraq as the first institution to celebrate the American Chemical Society’s World Chemistry Week annually.”
Promoting Chemistry and Scientific Curiosity
The celebration highlighted UOD’s commitment to scientific education, community engagement, and innovation, in line with its Strategic Plan (2023–2030). By participating in this international initiative, the University of Duhok encourages students to approach science through curiosity, creativity, and cultural awareness.
