UoD, September 21, 2026 | University Press Office (UNPO) — The University of Duhok (UoD), represented by the College of Medicine, hosted on September 16, the 7th International Conference on Diabetes over three days in academic partnership with the Kurdistan Diabetes Association, bringing together local and international physicians, specialists, academics, and healthcare professionals to discuss developments and challenges related to diabetes.

The opening ceremony was attended by Dr. Dawood Sulaiman Atrushi, President of UOD; Majid Sayid Saleh, representative of the Duhok Governorate; Dr. Dlovan M. F. Jalal, representative of the Minister of Health; Dr. Misbah Sayid Kamil, President-Elect of the International Diabetes Federation – Middle East and North Africa; Dr. Asma Deeb, President of the Middle East and North Africa Association for Diabetes and Endocrinology; Dr. Abbas Mahdi, President of the Iraqi Diabetes and Endocrinology Association; Dr. Maziyar Jabbar, President of the Kurdistan Diabetes Association; Dr. Dildar Haji Musa, Dean of the College of Medicine; and Dr. Araz Abdal, President of the Kurdistan Nurses Syndicate–Duhok Branch, alongside a large number of local and international physicians and specialists.

Strengthening Research and Healthcare

In his opening remarks, Dr. Dawood Sulaiman Atrushi emphasized that the role of universities extends beyond educating and preparing physicians. He highlighted the importance of universities contributing to impactful research, evidence-based medical solutions, and raising health awareness within the community.

He expressed hope that the conference would provide a productive platform for scientific dialogue, professional networking, and the development of joint projects, while stressing the importance of ensuring that the conference recommendations have a tangible impact on healthcare services and the lives of citizens.

In recognition of UoD’s active role in hosting and supporting the conference, the Higher Committee of the 7th International Conference on Diabetes expressed its appreciation to the President of the University of Duhok.

The second and third days of the conference featured more than 40 scientific lectures and research presentations delivered by local and international specialists, in addition to two workshops addressing diabetes and related health issues.

The conference reflects UoD’s commitment to advancing medical education, scientific research, healthcare innovation, and community health, while strengthening collaboration between the University and national and international healthcare institutions.
