UOD | University Press Office (UNPO) —
As part of its commitment to showcasing graduate success and strengthening the link between academic education and labor market needs, the University of Duhok (UOD) highlights the professional journey of Dr. Alind Salim Yasin, a 2022–2023 graduate of the College of Veterinary Medicine, currently working as a veterinarian specializing in large mammals and livestock.
Academic Foundation and Professional Transition
Dr. Alind describes his first day of work as challenging yet rewarding, marking the moment he truly experienced the reality of his profession beyond the classroom. He emphasizes that his theoretical studies at UOD provided a solid scientific foundation, enabling him to confidently succeed in his first job interview and respond effectively to technical questions.
Among the most important skills he acquired during his studies and continues to use daily are surgical and laboratory competencies. While adapting to fieldwork initially posed difficulties, persistence and hands-on experience helped him overcome these challenges.
Advice to Current Students
Reflecting on his academic journey, Dr. Alind encourages students to remain positive, ignore negative influences, and continuously strive for self-improvement. He stresses that success in veterinary medicine requires both strong technical skills and personal resilience, noting that professional networking plays a key role in securing job opportunities in today’s labor market.
Veterinary Medicine and Community Impact
Describing his profession, Dr. Alind characterizes veterinary medicine as a “hidden soldier”—a field vital to humanity, yet often underestimated. He notes that all academic subjects studied at university prove useful in practice, with their relevance varying by season and field demands.
Through livestock-related projects, his work supports local production, reduces unemployment, and contributes to public health protection by ensuring clean and safe animal products. These efforts align with broader goals of economic resilience and community well-being.
Looking ahead, Dr. Alind aspires to author a book addressing professional challenges and solutions for future graduates, emphasizing the need for more initiatives that support employment, local production, and national development.
Alignment with UOD’s Strategic Vision
This alumni spotlight reflects the University of Duhok Strategic Plan (2023–2038), particularly its focus on employability-driven education, community engagement, and preparing graduates to meet real-world challenges with confidence and responsibility.
