UOD PhD Research Offers Visionary Form-Based Code to Guide Sustainable Urban Growth in Duhok

June 5, 2025, 10 a.m.

📍UOD – June 4, 2025 – University Press Office (UNPO) | In alignment with the University of Duhok’s Strategic Plan 2023–2038—particularly its priorities for research excellence, sustainable urban development, and community-centered planning—PhD candidate Hanan Mihi Hussein successfully defended her dissertation:
“Contextual Adaptation Process of Form-Based Code for the Kurdistan Region of Iraq: Duhok City as a Model.”

Conducted at the College of City and Regional Planning and supervised by Prof. Dr. Ali Haider Al-Jameel, the research advances Strategic Objectives of the UOD by proposing a localized framework for Form-Based Codes (FBCs). These codes regulate urban form to ensure coherent, identity-preserving growth in rapidly developing cities.

The study focuses on Duhok’s transition from town to metropolitan area, particularly the integration of former villages such as Malta, Shindokha, Gavarke, and Shakhke. Through urban form analysis, regulatory comparison, and design of a tailored FBC framework, the research offers a replicable tool for local authorities to guide growth while preserving urban heritage.

The final codebook—informed by field surveys, planning documents, and stakeholder interviews—represents a strategic model that contributes to UOD’s mission to serve as a driver of sustainable development and institutional innovation.
