Duhok – February 24, 2025 – The University of Duhok (UOD) continues to demonstrate its commitment to academic excellence and impactful research. MSc student Beybin Jeladet Mustafa has successfully defended her Master’s thesis titled "Humanizing Cities: The Impact of Built Environment on Human State of Mind," earning an ‘Excellent’ grade from the Department of Spatial Planning, College of City and Regional Planning.

Supervised by Asst. Prof. Dr. Layla Mohammed Raswol, Mustafa’s research explores the intersection of environmental psychology and urban planning, shedding light on how built environments influence human emotions, perceptions, and cognitive well-being. Her multidisciplinary approach addresses critical challenges in sustainable urban development, reinforcing the importance of designing inclusive, engaging, and psychologically enriching spaces.

Key Insights from the Research

Mustafa's thesis offers a comprehensive examination of how urban environments shape emotional and cognitive responses. Drawing from field research and case studies, her findings underscore the significance of integrating mental well-being considerations into urban planning frameworks. Key themes in her research include:

  • Heritage and Historical Elements: Heritage-rich environments evoke pride, nostalgia, and a sense of belonging, strengthening community identity and fostering emotional attachment to public spaces.
  • Narrativity in Urban Design: By incorporating symbols, landmarks, and storytelling elements, cities can stimulate curiosity, inspiration, and engagement, creating memorable and meaningful spaces.
  • Biophilic Design: The inclusion of greenery, natural landscapes, and water features significantly reduces stress levels, enhances relaxation, and promotes mental restoration.

Research Findings and Outcomes

Mustafa conducted an extensive field study involving 173 participants from Duhok City, assessing their perceptions and emotional responses to various urban stimuli. The research culminated in the development of the Human City Model for Mental Well-being, a framework emphasizing the integration of historical, narrative, and biophilic elements to create emotionally responsive environments.

The study highlights the need for urban planners and policymakers to prioritize these factors, ensuring the creation of cities that foster mental well-being, promote social cohesion, and enhance overall quality of life.
