As part of Geography Awareness Week 2025, the Department of Geography at the University of Duhok’s (UOD) College of Education organized an interactive workshop titled “The Art of Oratory and Geographical Communication Skills.” The event reflects UOD’s strategic direction toward strengthening student-centered learning, academic innovation, and practical skill development that prepares graduates for real-world professional environments.

Attended by the Head of the Department, Dr. Mizgeen Mohammed Hasan, and led by Mr. Firas Hassan Salman and Mr. Hakar Ramzi Mosa, the workshop brought together students for a hands-on training experience focused on enhancing their public speaking, presentation skills, and effective communication techniques. The session emphasized key elements of successful oratory performance, including body language, eye contact, audience engagement, vocal clarity, and confidence-building strategies.

Developing Future-Ready Geography Students

The workshop served as an opportunity for students to practice and refine the essential skills needed for careers in geospatial studies, environmental analysis, urban planning, education, and community engagement—all sectors where communication excellence is critical.

Students delivered short presentations and participated in interactive debates designed to stimulate critical thinking. Among the topics discussed were:

  • The long-standing debate between the flat vs. spherical Earth perspectives

  • The academic and professional value of human geography vs. physical geography

  • The origins of early human professions: agriculture or animal husbandry

These sessions encouraged students to articulate arguments clearly, respond to peer questions, and build confidence in presenting geographical concepts to diverse audiences.
