UOD Seminar Unveils Enhanced Cryptographic Algorithm to Strengthen Data Security
Innovative Research on the Vigenère Cipher Presented by College of Agricultural Engineering Sciences
📍 College of Agricultural Engineering Sciences (CAES) | June, 2025 – University Press Office (UNPO) | As part of its commitment to advancing scientific innovation and digital security, the College of Agricultural Engineering Sciences at the University of Duhok hosted a seminar titled:
“Modified Vigenère Cipher Algorithm Based on a New Key Generation Method.”
The seminar was presented by Mr. Thamer Hassan Hameed, from the Department of Basic Sciences, and was held in the Seminar Hall of the Basic Science Department.
The research introduces an upgraded cryptographic model that enhances the classic Vigenère cipher—historically one of the most widely used encryption methods—by addressing key vulnerabilities through three major improvements:
- A novel key generation technique that avoids repetition
- A 95x95 character matrix instead of the standard 26x26, broadening the encryption space
- Case sensitivity inclusion, increasing resistance to cryptanalysis
🎯 Seminar Objectives:
- Improve encryption strength for securing modern digital communications
- Demonstrate how modified classical algorithms can support today’s data security demands
- Contribute to the field of applied cryptography through academic research
- Encourage student involvement in interdisciplinary computing and security sciences
The session aligns with the University of Duhok’s Strategic Plan 2023–2038 by promoting research excellence, digital transformation, and capacity-building in cybersecurity and applied sciences.
