The University of Duhok proceeds with developing horticulture in a scientific way

Sponsored by Nuffic, the Dutch organization for internationalization in education and in cooperation with the University of Basra and a University from Jordan, College of Agricultural Engineering Sciences in the University of Duhok organized a 6th workshop about the construction of an academic system in the field of horticulture. The workshop, which lasted for five days, was attended by a number of Dutch organizations as well as agricultural engineers from the UoD, was part of a series of 10 workshops conducted with the same objective. 

Explaining the details of the project, Dr. Rafael Shlemon Toma, Head of Horticulture Department in the UoD stated: “This project involves the continuous employment of academic mechanisms for the development of gardens in Duhok Governorate and its districts which have so far been highly profitable.”

Dr. Toma commented on his own research on the field focusing on the example of potato in which they have been able to adapt into a new type and develop in Duhok. He also talked about the vast annual production of potato in Duhok and that they will be implementing the same process in Abu Ghraib and Basra. 

The Department of Horticulture is an academic department in the College of Agricultural Engineering Sciences in the University of Duhok in 1992 with the establishment of Duhok University. When it was first established, the department was named Agricultural Production and the name was changed in 2001. The teaching staff includes 34 teachers and admits more than 250 students annually.
