UOD Leads the Way in Water Crisis Management Research in Collaboration with UNICEF
In a significant step towards addressing the ongoing water crisis in Duhok province, the University of Duhok (UOD), in partnership with UNESCO, hosted a special event showcasing groundbreaking student research on water resource management. The event took place on January 23, 2025, at the Peshmerga Hall within the university's Student Center, bringing together university leadership, faculty, and students committed to sustainable solutions.
The event was attended by key academic figures, including Dr. Dawood Sleman Atrushi, President of UOD; Dr. Luqman Hadi Hassan, Vice President for Scientific Affairs and Higher Education; and Dr. Nabaz Ibrahim Mohammed, Vice President for Student Affairs. In addition, several college deans, department heads, and faculty members joined the discussion, highlighting the university's commitment to tackling real-world challenges through research and innovation.
Strengthening Scientific Collaboration
In his opening remarks, Dr. Mohammed Aziz, Dean of the College of Science, praised the students' dedication and commended UNESCO for their support. He emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts in enhancing the sustainability of water resources and urged other organizations to back similar initiatives aimed at environmental sustainability.
"We are immensely proud of our students' contributions to solving critical challenges such as water management. Their research will serve as a foundation for further studies and practical implementations in the region," said Dr. Aziz.
Research Outcomes and Practical Solutions
Over a period of four months, 29 students conducted in-depth research focusing on water purification techniques, efficient water reuse strategies, and the broader impact of water scarcity on local communities. Their studies identified actionable solutions that can aid policymakers and environmental agencies in mitigating the crisis.
Some key highlights of the research included:
- Innovative approaches to water purification and recycling
- Sustainable models for reducing water consumption in agriculture
- Assessment of the economic impact of water scarcity on local communities
Bridging Academia and Industry
The initiative not only aims to provide scientific insights but also fosters stronger collaboration between academia, government bodies, and local industries. The university is working closely with regional stakeholders, environmental NGOs, and government entities to ensure that these research findings translate into actionable policies.
In recognition of their efforts, participating students were awarded certificates of achievement, acknowledging their contributions to advancing the region's water management capabilities.
