Professor Asmat M. Khalid was a pioneering leader and the founding President of the University of Duhok (UoD), serving from its establishment in 1992 until 2011. A distinguished geotechnical engineer, Prof. Khalid earned his doctorate from the Bolton Institute in the United Kingdom. His visionary leadership and unwavering commitment were instrumental in transforming UoD into one of Iraq's most prominent institutions of higher education.

Building a Legacy

Under Prof. Khalid’s tenure, UoD experienced remarkable growth, expanding from an initial two colleges to 16 colleges, catering to a wide range of academic disciplines. He oversaw the establishment of the university’s main campus, which included the construction of numerous academic buildings and the iconic University Conference Hall, renowned for its state-of-the-art facilities.

Prof. Khalid’s regional approach and ability to mobilize resources were key to these achievements. His efforts positioned the University of Duhok as a cornerstone of higher education and development in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq.
