Sustainable Car Wash Solutions – Duhok, Kurdistan
Overview
In response to water scarcity in Duhok, the Light Group from the University of Duhok explored wastewater treatment and reuse in car wash services through a Participatory Action Research (PAR) project.
What We Did
- Assessed public opinion and technical feasibility of eco-friendly car wash systems
- Explored treatment methods: settling tanks, hydro cyclone systems, UV disinfection
- Collected data via:
- 26 interviews
- 3 focus group discussions
- 91 surveys
Key Findings
- 41.7% use car washes weekly, mostly in summer
- 86% support eco-friendly car wash systems
- 66% are willing to pay more for recycled water use
- Main barriers:
- 56% lack of government support
- 48% low awareness
- 44% high costs
