UOD’s Agricultural Extension Unit Strengthens Sustainable Agriculture Through Training Program for 200 Farmers in Amedi

As part of its Third Mission and in alignment with the University of Duhok Strategic Plan (2023–2038), the University of Duhok (UOD) continues to extend its academic expertise beyond the campus to serve local communities. Within this framework, the Agricultural Extension Unit at UOD, in cooperation with the Bare Garay Project and the Directorate of Agriculture in Amedi District, organized a specialized training program for 200 farmers from the Amedi area.

The program focused on integrated pest management and plant disease control, aiming to provide farmers with practical, science-based solutions that enhance productivity while promoting environmentally responsible agricultural practices.

Event Details and Participation

The training was held on Thursday, December 18, 2025, in Kani Village, with the participation of academic leaders, government officials, and local community representatives. Among the attendees were Mr. Warshin Salman, District Mayor of Amedi; Dr. Shukri Haji Salih, Dean of the College of Agricultural Engineering Sciences at UOD; Mr. Mohammed Mohsen, a local community figure; Mr. Hakar Hamid, Director of Agriculture in Amedi District; and Dr. Asaad Ali, Head of the Agricultural Advisory Unit at the University of Duhok.

Academic and Community Perspectives

In their opening remarks, Mr. Warshin Salman and Mr. Mohammed Mohsen expressed their appreciation for the initiative, emphasizing its importance in addressing the practical challenges faced by farmers in the region. They commended the University of Duhok for its active role in supporting rural communities and contributing to local economic resilience.

For his part, Dr. Asaad Ali highlighted that the training reflects UOD’s commitment to supporting domestic agricultural production and strengthening food security, particularly in Amadiya as a key agricultural area. He stressed the university’s role in transferring scientific knowledge directly from research institutions to farmers in the field.

Training Content and Methodology

The training combined theoretical instruction with practical demonstrations, enabling participants to directly apply scientific methods in their daily agricultural work. Key topics addressed included:

  • Scientific identification and prevention of plant diseases

  • Integrated pest management techniques

  • Safe and effective treatment methods

This applied approach aims to reduce crop losses and improve long-term agricultural sustainability.

Strategic Context

The training builds on the establishment of the Agricultural Extension Unit in Amedi on July 7, 2025, which represents a strategic step by the University of Duhok to expand community engagement and provide continuous, evidence-based support to farmers across the Kurdistan Region.
