Co-existence and Religious Minorities in Iraq

To meet one of the Corner’s goals of promoting democratic values, diversity, open dialogue, peace and co-existence, ACD collaborated with PAIT NGO and Zaeem Khalat, a SUSI alumnus, in hosting an in- person seminar on October 24, 2022 to give the participants information about the different religious minorities that exist in Iraq and highlight their representation in the Iraqi constitution and government.

The seminar was presented by Talal Murad Saleh, A coordinator from Masarat Foundation and a representative of the Yazidi minority at the Minorities Press Center in Iraq.

Topics that were discussed in the program included:

- The definition of the term “minority”.
- Reasons that led to decreasing minorities populations in Iraq.
- The rights of minorities.
- Misconceptions about minorities and how to combat stereotypes.
- Minorities representation in the Iraqi constitution.
- Encouraging co-existence through introducing minorities in school curriculums.
