The University of Duhok (UOD), through its Institute of Psychotherapy and Psychotraumatology (IPP), continues to strengthen its commitment to evidence-based mental health care and international academic cooperation. As part of this effort, the team of Psychotherapy Clinic for Addiction participated in an intensive practice-oriented training program in Germany from 25 November to 2 December 2025, hosted by the Psychotherapy Clinic for Addiction Treatment in Stuttgart.

From Theory to Practice: Building Clinical Competence

This specialized training followed the theoretical program delivered in Duhok in June 2025, marking a key transition from conceptual learning to hands-on clinical exposure. The program was designed for a multidisciplinary team comprising psychiatrists, psychotherapists, and social workers, with the aim of familiarizing them with practical addiction treatment models applied in German clinical settings.

Structured Observations Across Leading Addiction-Care Facilities

Over the course of seven days, the Psychotherapy Clinic for Addiction team engaged in structured clinical observations across a range of addiction-care institutions in Stuttgart and Tübingen, including hospitals, specialized clinics, inpatient wards, and outpatient units. The training combined theoretical input with direct observation of clinical practice, offering insight into evidence-based approaches, applied treatment methods, and integrated care models.

Participants were introduced to the full clinical workflow—from patient intake and assessment to treatment planning and case closure—through professional presentations and guided discussions led by psychiatrists, medical doctors, and social workers working within the host institutions.

Advancing Mental Health and Addiction Services at UOD

The knowledge and experience gained during this international training will be actively applied by the IPP Addiction Team to enhance mental health and addiction treatment services at the University of Duhok and contribute to broader regional capacity-building efforts. This initiative aligns with UOD’s Strategic Plan (2023–2038), particularly its priorities of capacity development, international engagement, and community-oriented services.

Building on UOD’s Landmark Addiction Treatment Initiative

This advanced clinical training builds directly on the recent inauguration of the University of Duhok’s Psychotherapy Clinic for Addiction and the renovation of the Institute of Psychotherapy and Psychotraumatology (IPP). The Germany visit represents the applied international dimension of this milestone, ensuring that UOD’s newly established addiction services are grounded in globally recognized, evidence-based clinical practices and supported by continuous professional capacity development.

Through sustained partnerships and professional exchange, UOD continues to position itself as a regional hub for innovative, evidence-based psychotherapy and addiction treatment.
