Iraq’s Political Future in Focus: UOD and Salahaddin University Examine the Post–October 7 Landscape

The College of Political Sciences at the University of Duhok (UOD), in collaboration with the College of Political Sciences at Salahaddin University–Erbil, held an insightful symposium titled “The Dimensions of the Iraqi Parliamentary Elections amid Middle East Changes After October 7, 2023.”
The event aimed to analyze the evolving regional dynamics and their implications for Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, aligning with UOD’s strategic vision to foster research-based policy dialogue and regional expertise.
Distinguished Academic Participation
The symposium was attended by:
- Dr. Dawood Sulaiman Atrushi, President of the University of Duhok
- Dr. Nabaz Ibraheem Mohammed, Vice President for Students Affairs
- Dr. Hawar Khalil Tahir, Dean of the College of Political Science, UOD

The symposium featured two engaging academic panels that examined Iraq’s political transformation in light of post-October 7th developments.
Panel I: “The Consequences of the Post-October 7th Events on Iraq and the Kurdistan Region”
Moderated by Dr. Omed Abdulqadir Karim, the panelists included:
- Dr. Hiwa Majid Khalil – The Impact of Iran-Israel Conflicts on Iraq and the Kurdistan Region
- Dr. Omran Omar Ali – Power Changes in the Middle East and the Position of Iraq and the Kurdistan Region
- Dr. Wajeeh Avdo Ali – Sub-regional Countries and Their Impact on Electoral Behavior in Iraqi Society after 2005: An Analytical Study of Internal and External Dimensions
Panel II: “The Iraqi Parliamentary Elections: Towards Reshaping the Political Map”

Their discussion focused on participating parties and alliances and the emerging political equations shaping Iraq and Kurdistan’s future governance.
Open Dialogue and Recognition
An open discussion followed, allowing participants to exchange insights on the Kurdish political role in Baghdad and the strategic implications of the upcoming parliamentary elections.
