College of Veterinary Medicine Strengthens Support for Scientific Research at UOD
UOD | University Press Office (UNPO) —
The College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Duhok (UOD) plays a key institutional role in supporting and facilitating scientific research conducted by researchers from UOD and other universities. Through its academic, technical, and logistical expertise, the College ensures that research involving animals is carried out in accordance with high scientific and ethical standards.
As many scientific studies require work on various animals, the College provides comprehensive veterinary support, including animal healthcare services and supervision of authorized surgical procedures for research purposes. These procedures, such as the removal of specific parts for experimental analysis, are performed under anesthesia by specialized personnel, with continuous control of drug administration, injections, and animal health conditions.
All procedures are conducted under the direct and continuous supervision of experienced veterinarians, ensuring strict compliance with approved research protocols, ethical regulations, and animal welfare standards.
Shared Roles of the College Affiliates
1. Role of the College
The College provides administrative facilitation and institutional support, including approval and allocation of research spaces, consumables, and available equipment. These actions are implemented in line with policies governing the ethical care and use of laboratory animals. The College also works to address administrative and logistical challenges that may affect research progress.
2. Supervisors and Experienced Veterinarians (Specialized Faculty Members)
Specialized faculty members act as the scientific and professional reference for animal-based research. Their responsibilities include veterinary supervision, medical and surgical consultation when required, continuous monitoring of animal health, and training researchers on best practices for animal handling, anesthesia, and drug administration.
3. Technical Execution Staff (Technicians, Laboratory, and Quarantine Staff)
These staff members support daily research activities by:
- Preparing operating rooms, surgical tools, anesthesia equipment, and injection materials.
- Assisting during surgical procedures and sample collection.
- Maintaining accurate records of animal care, feeding, health status, and medication use.
4. Animal Care and Logistical Staff
Animal care staff ensure a clean and functional research environment through daily hygiene, regular provision of food and water, and logistical support for transporting animals during research activities.
Research Integrity and Ethical Oversight
All services and procedures are carried out upon the researcher’s request and under their supervision, ensuring alignment with research objectives and compliance with ethical animal care standards.
Through this coordinated framework, the College of Veterinary Medicine supports the University of Duhok’s strategic goals in research excellence, ethical responsibility, and sustainable scientific development.
