Upon the successes of the UNDP-funded New York University-University of Duhok “Improving Local Capacity to Build Peace and Improve Social Cohesion among Host and Displaced Communities in Duhok and Nineveh Governorates” project in 2016-2017, New York University (NYU) and University of Duhok entered into a new subaward agreement (No. S0123-01 SP: Al8-0069-5001). The agreement, which entered into 9th October 2017, has been signed by Prof. Dr. Mosleh Duhoky, the president of the University of Duhok, and Tatiana Shapiro, assistant contract officer at NYU.

Under this one year Agreement, the University of Duhok Center for Peace and Conflict Resolution Studies (CPCRS) will carry out, inter alia, the following main activities:

1-      Organize three 6-day intensive courses on Mediation, Conflict Assessment and Reconciliation for at least 20 academics from University of Duhok and University of Mosul. CPCRS will supply three facilitators to work as co-instructors to international instructors supplied by NYU;

2-      Organize four three-day trainings each in conflict assessment, mediation and reconciliation for groups of 20 University of Mosul students, using curriculum developed as part of the intensive courses;

3-      Building the capacity of at least 20 youth each in Sumel, Sheikhan and Duhok to engage meaningfully in peacebuilding initiatives strengthened;

4-      Design and conduct three two-day communication/advocacy training for at least 20 youth, primarily urban IDPs, in each of three project locations in Sumel, Sheikhan and Duhok;

5-      Design and conduct three two-day community initiative planning training for at least 20 youth, primarily urban IDPs, in Sumel, Sheikhan and Duhok;

6-      Organize three three-day conflict transformation simulation exercise for at least 20 youth, primarily urban IDPs, and five community leaders, in Sumel, Sheikhan and Duhok;

7-      Organize and implement nine small-grants social cohesion projects to be implemented by mixed-gender groups of four or five youth each; with three grants each designated for implementation in Sumel, Sheikhan and Duhok.

Worth mentioning, NYU has been awarded a certain grant from United Nations Development Program, with fund from Austrian Development Cooperation, for support this project.
