The department of Applied Geosciences of The mission of the Dept. of Applied Earth Science is to graduate cadres in Applied Geology which are capable of exploring and exploiting the Earth resources in the Iraqi Kurdistan. These include economic and industrial minerals and rocks, oil and gas, surface and groundwater. It also involves monitoring the environment of the earth and engineering geology. The science of geology is concerned with the application of all the natural sciences, mathematics and computer in the study of planet Earth. The aim is to exploit the treasures of the Earth for the good of humanity, civilization and progress.

The bachelor study in applied Earth science takes four years in which the student takes courses with theoretical lectures and practical sessions. These together with field training constitute an intrinsic part of the student’s training. The mode of study is in two semesters courses each year. The fourth year involves deepening of the geological knowledge in one of the applied specialties such as petroleum geology, surface and groundwater, engineering geology, geophysics, geochemistry, environmental geology, and industrial minerals and rocks.
