The doctoral thesis by Dr. Burhan Abdullah Zaman, entitled "Pre- and Post-Transfusion Effects of Erythroferrone on Hepcidin Suppression in β-Thalassemia Major Patients, and the Potential Role of SMAD8 in the Erythropoietin-Erythroferrone-Hepcidin Axis" was deliberated on November 18, 2023, at the Cultural Center—UoD. This thesis was presented to the College of Pharmacy council at the University of Duhok as part of the requirements for the Doctorate of Philosophy in Molecular Physiology.

It is notable that a study derived from the thesis, titled: The effect of erythroferrone suppression by transfusion on the erythropoietin–erythroferrone–hepcidin axis in transfusion dependent thalassaemia: A pre–post cohort study.
