UOD Launches Career Development & Employability Skills Curriculum to Bridge Academia and Industry

A Pioneering Initiative to Enhance Graduate Employability in Kurdistan

On 23 December 2025, the University of Duhok (UOD) marked a significant milestone in higher education and workforce readiness by launching the Career Development & Employability Skills Curriculum. This groundbreaking program is designed to equip students with essential competencies that align with market demands, preparing them for successful careers in an increasingly competitive global economy.

The curriculum focuses on critical employability skills, including:

  • Teamwork
  • Leadership
  • Problem-solving
  • Career planning

This initiative represents a strategic collaboration between:

  • UNDP Iraq
  • The Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research in the Kurdistan Region
  • USAID Iraq, as the primary funding partner

As the first unified employability program to be introduced across universities in the Kurdistan Region, this curriculum underscores a collective commitment to empowering students with practical skills and bridging the academia-industry divide.

UOD: Leading the Way in Career Readiness

The University of Duhok is at the forefront of career education innovation, becoming the first university in the Kurdistan Region to implement this transformative curriculum. This initiative aligns with UOD’s Strategic Plan 2023–2038, which prioritizes graduate employability, digital transformation, and industry engagement.

A key contributor to the program's development is Asst. Prof. Dr. Rebean Ramadhan H. Al-Silefanee, a renowned UNDP expert in entrepreneurship and business and a valued faculty member at UOD. His leadership has played a crucial role in shaping the curriculum, ensuring that it effectively integrates real-world applications and employer expectations.

Empowering Students with Real-World Skills

The Career Development & Employability Skills Curriculum offers students:

  • Hands-on experience through interactive learning
  • Industry insights to navigate career pathways effectively
  • Practical competencies tailored for today’s evolving job market
  • Confidence-building exercises to enhance professional development

During the launch event at the College of Administration and Economics, Dr. Rebean Ramadhan H. Al-Silefanee introduced the Integrated Project System for Employment Capacity Development in the Kurdistan Region, highlighting that:

  • The curriculum has been in development for six months
  • It will be implemented across all universities in Kurdistan in the next academic year
  • A 10-week pilot program will be conducted at UOD to refine and assess the curriculum’s impact
