Over the last decade, Project-Based Learning (PjBL) has been increasingly popular in a variety of educational environments. PjBL is particularly common in engineering in Higher Education (HE); for example, in Denmark, most engineering institutes use PjBL to some level. A review of the literature, however, indicates that the technique is used in a wide range of fields in various national settings, including Media and Business Studies, Geography, Environmental Science, Education, Information Technology, and Sustainability. PjBL is difficult to define, as Hanney and Savin-Baden point out because the term "is broad, far-reaching, and means different things in different countries and disciplinary areas". Furthermore, it is closely related to, and sometimes used interchangeably with, Problem Based Learning (PBL), or is included under other umbrella terminologies such as the Inquiry-based Approach or the Trans-disciplinary Case Study.
