About the Department

Biomedical Engineering (BME) is a discipline engineering department that uses knowledge of biology and medicine to improve human health. It is the integration between the engineering sciences and the biomedical sciences considering the implementation of the clinical practice. A biomedical engineer typically is able to perform the following:

  1. Understanding and Modelling of anatomical and physiological phenomena which are, in general, nonlinear, non-stationary and non-deterministic.
  2. Analyzing and processing of data which originate from the human body and which incorporate spatial or temporal patterns indicative for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes.
  3. Physiological measurements to assess physiological functions, for use in research as well as in clinical practice;
  4. Development and optimizing/action of the design of biomedical devices that improves the medical practice and health care delivery. These devices should take into consideration the characteristics and materials of human organs. Also, these devices could be used to control, diagnose and treat parts of the human body which are not functioning properly.

Based on the aforementioned duties of the biomedical engineering and the shortage of that speciality in Kurdistan, the college of engineering cooperating with the presidency of Duhok University was starting to work closely with one of the international University based in Germany, called University of Applied Sciences Mittelhessen Giessen (THM), especially the both academic staffs in THM, Prof. Dr. Thomas Schanze and Prof. Dr. Martin Fiebich to establish this department. The reasons behind this cooperation are attributed to avail from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) grant and also to ensure that the students will be as well-prepared as possible for their future career in the private or public sectors in Kurdistan Region-Iraq. Hence, in March 2014, the University of Duhok was able to win that grant, for Four years, with the supporting and cooperating of the THM and since 2014 several activities have been carried out between the two universities in terms of exchanging the academic staffs, organizing the workshops and delivering the lecturers in some topics that related to biomedical engineering. Over the last four years with the THM many challenges that proposed to be facing these departments are sorted. It is worth to mention that the General Directorate of Duhok Health provides a great support to establish this department throughout the four years, therefore, the College of Engineering Board consequently has decided to establish this department and opening the gate for new students since the academic year 2018-2019. The registration of students is fully parallel (i.e. all students must pay the academics fees).

Mission

To graduate highly qualified Engineers in the biomedical engineering field; to apply engineering knowledge, design systems and equipment to solve and simplify biological and medical problems.

Vision

The BME Department will contribute significantly to the improvement of the medical services in Kurdistan region including the prophylactic, diagnostic, therapeutic capabilities so as to attain self-reliance in this field as well as preserving the cost of patient’s medical treatment that Kurdish people are spending outside the Kurdistan Region.
